Prior to the 1st October 2009, Doncaster NHS reimbursed Pharmacists for providing advice to care homes on the safe storage and handling of medicines, this ceased as of 30th September 2009. The service that was in place had not been reviewed since its introduction a number of years ago. In light of the new pharmacy contract and following the production of a national suggested enhanced service for advice to care homes, NHS Doncaster had reviewed this provision and awarded a Tender to a single provider of this service to the whole of Doncaster, this being CHAT (Care Homes Advisory Team) part of the HI Weldrick Group.
CHAT has a wide range of aims to support and advice in accordance with the National Minimum Standards relating to Medicines Management, this is regardless of who actually provides your dispensing service.
The service aims to ensure that care homes throughout Doncaster have appropriate systems in place covering the proper and effective ordering of drugs and appliances, their cost effective use, safe storage and disposal, supply and administration and appropriate record keeping. Advice regarding the use of residents "own" medicines (prescribed and purchased) will also be provided.
